I had a great conversation recently with my friend Josh Comrie on his podcast 2 Commas. We covered building and exiting businesses, lessons learned, and the realities of scaling.
I’ve told my story about how I set out to make $30m before 30 several times, but few interviewers have done a better job than Josh.
I had previously done an epic and wide ranging interview with the late great Jake Millar, however it no longer seems to be anywhere on the internet, so it seemed like a good time for me to re-tell my story.
If you’re a founder thinking about growth or your next move, Josh’s podcast is worth a listen, he’s doing a really professional job recording episodes and finding interesting kiwi business people to talk to.
Josh’s description of our episode:
This is my buddy Seeby Woodhouse, he came on the podcast and we went deep!
He has an almost unbelievable story covering his journey from a $100 startup into a $25M exit, all before turning 30. He’s somewhat of a savant, a feat considering he was home-schooled for 8 years (in those days = self-taught).
Some pure gold covered in the show:
📈 How he built Orcon from scratch, growing 100%+ EVERY year for 9 straight years
🔄 How he navigated the "free internet" era when competitors were literally giving away what he was selling
💸 The brutal, year-long due diligence process that nearly derailed his exit
🤯 The wild post-exit spending spree (including a mansion with retractable stripper poles!) and the lessons learned
That it wasn’t all wealth: "I've survived near bankruptcy THREE times" 😳
Seeby is totally frank and at times brutally honest on the opportunities he missed - including a Bitcoin fortune that slipped through his fingers and getting played in the property market. Not just a rollicking ride, there’s gold in here for founders and wantrepreneurs alike.
